We Won! 1988 Daytona CS is Class Champion in ‘One Lap’ 2000 by Mike Stimac, Great Lakes SDAC
It was the most exciting and the most exhausting event I have ever participated in. Thanks to my co-driver, Ralph Denuzzio, we won the Economy Car Class in the 2000 Michelin One Lap of America. We beat the two-time defending champs Seeley and Smith when their Neon turbo broke at Road Atlanta, and a factory team Saturn coupe with SCCA National Champion driver Mike Kramer who had the advantage of dealership service and engineering support from the Saturn Corp. Ralph & I would like to thank all the SDAC members that came out to support us. We met friendly faces at every track and tried to take a few minutes to chat about our adventure. (If we were conscious) The ‘One Lap’ is the modern day successor to the infamous Cannonball Run and was held from May 6-13. The format for the race is nearly twenty- four hours a day driving with racing competition taking place as time trials on race tracks throughout the country. The event is the ultimate test of physical endurance and car preparation.
The following is a summary of the time trials:
There were also four checkpoints along the way: The Carolina Rod Shop in Piedmont, SC, Race Rock Café in Orlando, FL, the Cannonball Run Pub in Wyoming, NY, and the Walden Inn in Greencastle, IN. In all, we logged about 4,300 miles in six days. I would like to thank everyone who helped support the race, including: Chris Still, Mike Bachmann, Barry Miles, George Kish, Carl Bauersfeld, Jim McCracken, Bill Gamalski, Mike DeMoss, and Rick Diogo.
